ABOUT JAMES M. MINAMOTO

Jim Minamoto is an attorney and the Senior Foreign Counsel at Anderson Mori & Tomotsune, one of Japan’s largest law firms, located in Tokyo.  He is a 3rd generation Japanese American born and raised in New York, with over 13 years of professional experience in Japan.  He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University in 1981 (Physics, Philosophy), and a JD degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law in 1984.  From 1985 to 1993, he worked in New York City as a corporate litigation attorney.  In 1993, he relocated to Japan to work for Anderson Mori, an international corporate law firm currently having over 200 lawyers, where he has since continuously practiced. 

Jim’s practice focuses on the representation of overseas, multinational clients from such jurisdictions as the United States, the United Kingdom, continental Europe and Australia, doing business in Japan.  His work includes mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and strategic alliances and business establishment.  Jim is admitted to the bar in New York and in 1994, he gained admission to the Japanese bar as a special foreign member.  He has co-authored numerous articles on Japanese legal topics including competition law, mergers and acquisitions, and reforms to the Japanese corporate law, and has been an invited speaker at the Tokyo University Graduate School of Law and various legal conferences.  He has served as co-chair of the Legal Services Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, where he has been a member for over 10 years, and as President of the Japan Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League.  He is also a member of the Tokyo American Club, is married and has two children.
